Today, on the Memorial of Our Lady of Fátima, we joyfully launch Her Feminine Genius, a space dedicated to honoring, cultivating, and celebrating the unique gifts women bring to the world.

This launch is especially meaningful because the expression “feminine genius” comes from the teachings of Pope John Paul II, who reflected deeply on the dignity and vocation of women in Mulieris Dignitatem and Letter to Women. He used this phrase to describe the distinctive gifts women bring to the family, society, the Church, and the wider human community.

The feminine genius is not a stereotype or a limitation. Rather, it is an affirmation that women, created in the image and likeness of God, possess a remarkable capacity for attentiveness to persons, compassion, moral courage, and life-giving love. These qualities are not exclusive to women, but Pope John Paul II believed women often embody them in particularly profound ways.

Rooted in Equal Dignity

At the heart of this teaching is the truth that men and women are equal in dignity. Both are created by God and called to communion and self-giving love. Their differences are not signs of inequality, but expressions of complementarity and mutual enrichment.

No one embodies the feminine genius more perfectly than Mary, Mother of Jesus. Her “yes” to God at the Annunciation reveals freedom, trust, and receptivity. Her fidelity at the foot of the Cross and her maternal presence in the early Church reveal courageous and enduring love.

For this reason, launching Her Feminine Genius on the Memorial of Our Lady of Fátima is especially fitting.

Pope John Paul II had a profound devotion to Our Lady of Fátima. After surviving the 1981 assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II, he credited Mary’s maternal intercession for preserving his life. May 13 became for him a lasting reminder of Our Lady’s protection and guidance.

Launching Her Feminine Genius

Her Feminine Genius is envisioned as a place of formation, encouragement, and community where women are affirmed in their God-given dignity and empowered to live their vocation with wisdom, courage, and grace.

We entrust this initiative to Mary, Mother of Jesus, asking her to inspire every woman to recognize the beauty of her calling and the transformative power of her love.

In Letter to Women, Pope John Paul II wrote:

“Thank you, every woman, for the simple fact of being a woman.”

To all women—mothers, daughters, sisters, wives, consecrated women, professionals, and leaders—thank you. Your wisdom, compassion, resilience, and faith are essential to the flourishing of humanity.
